Ukulele enthusiast and first generation college student Alessandra Rivera reflects on what unites us as Filipino Americans (i.e.- our shared insecurity of not feeling Filipino “enough”) & the intergenerational conflicts commonly found amongst many Fil-Am families.
Alessandra shares her frustrations in dealing with her family’s “immovable colonial mentality”, challenging the gender binary, colorism & anti-Blackness that we seem to be expected to accept as defaults, & how she realized the importance of self-advocacy & regulation when it comes to seeking help for her mental health.
